Offside: (does not apply in small-sided games)-Occurs when a
player positions himself nearer to his opponent’s goal line than
both the ball and the second-to-last opponent. No fewer than two
defenders (usually the goalkeeper and one other defender) must
be nearer the goal line than the attacker. The person advancing
with the ball must be first to cross the last line of defense.
A player in an offside position is only penalized if, at the
moment the ball is played by a teammate, he/she is, in the
opinion of the referee, involved in active play, or interfering
with play or any opponent, or gaining an advantage by being in
that position. When a player who is in an offside position
receives the ball from a teammate or is involved directly in the
play, an offside is called and an indirect free kick is awarded
to the defense.
Hand ball: A foul where a player (other than the goalie
in the penalty area) deliberately touches the ball with his Hand
or arm. The opposing team is awarded a direct free kick.
Holding: When an opponent’s movement is obstructed with
either hands or arms, a direct kick is awarded.
Free kick: (indirect or direct)-A kick awarded to a
player for a foul committed by the opposition. Depending on the
severity of the foul, the kick is determined to be a direct or
an indirect kick. Generally, a free kick is taken from the spot
where the foul occurred. In adult leagues no opposing player may
be within 10 yards of the ball before it is kicked.
Indirect kick: A kick awarded to a player for a less
serious foul committed by the opposing team. A goal cannot be
scoreD off an indirect kick until the ball touches at least one
other player from either team.
Direct kick: A kick awarded to a player for a serious
foul committed by the opposing team. This is a free kick aimed
directly at the goal and a goal can be Scored directly from this
kick without the ball touching another player.
Penalty kick: A direct free kick awarded to the offending
team when a defending player commits a major Foul within its own
18-yard penalty area. The shot is taken From the penalty kick
mark and only involves the kicker And the goalie. The goalie can
move on the goal line, but not in front of it until the ball has
been touched by the kicker.
Charge: To run into an opponent. This is legal if done
from the front or side of the ball carrier. However, it is
illegal against a player without the ball or from behind.
Tripping: If a player uses any part of his body to trip
An opposing player, a direct kick is awarded.
Yellow card: A card that a referee holds up to warn a
player for dangerous or unsportsmanlike behavior.
Red Card: Two yellow cards in one game earn a player an
automatic red card, signaling his removal from the game. A
player can also receive a red card for an overly aggressive
foul. The player receiving a red card may not be replaced and
his team must play with one fewer player for the remainder of
the game.
